New California Energy Rebate Programs for Homeowners: Save on Electrical Upgrades in 2025
by Gary Oct 3, 2025
Now Is the Time to Upgrade: California’s New Energy Rebates
California has just launched a fresh wave of federally funded rebate programs to help homeowners make their homes more energy-efficient and safer — and that includes electrification upgrades that align perfectly with the services we offer. California Energy Commission
If you’ve been considering an electrical panel upgrade, EV charger installation, or switching major systems to electric, now is a prime opportunity to act. These incentives are designed to make it more affordable to modernize and future-proof your home.
What’s the Deal?
The programs fall under the umbrella of the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEEHRA) initiative in California, backed by the Inflation Reduction Act. California Energy Commission
- The first phase is already accepting applications for multifamily building electrification and appliance retrofits. California Energy Commission
- For single-family homes, rebates for heat pumps and other electrification upgrades will open soon. California Energy Commission
- Another program called HOMES is in development, promising incentives for whole-home energy efficiency retrofits. California Energy Commission
Together, these programs could help you reduce your energy bills, reduce emissions, and boost your home’s comfort and value.
Why This Matters for You
As an electrician specializing in residential upgrades, we see many homes that are under-equipped to handle newer technologies: outdated panels, limited capacity for EV chargers, or inefficient wiring. These rebates help offset the costs to bring homes up to modern standards — and ensure those upgrades make sense on your monthly budget.
Some upgrade opportunities include:
- Panel upgrades to support electrification
- Wiring for heat pumps, induction cooking, or electric space heating
- EV charger installations
- Lighting retrofits to LED
- HVAC upgrades with efficient electric systems

⚠️ What We Know About Rebate Availability (as of now)
As of the most recent update from the California Energy Commission, the HEEHRA rebate program for single-family homes is fully reserved statewide. This means that new applications, income verification, or reservation requests for single-family electrification upgrades are not being accepted at this time.
However, HEEHRA rebates are still available for multifamily housing projects, and the state is planning to launch a Direct Install Program in 2025 for income-qualified households. This new program may provide free electrical upgrades for eligible homeowners—offering another path to energy efficiency without out-of-pocket costs.
In addition to HEEHRA, there are still several active programs you may qualify for:
- Utility-Sponsored Rebates: Providers like Southern California Edison continue to offer rebates for lighting, panel upgrades, smart thermostats, and more.
- Federal Tax Credits: Through the Inflation Reduction Act, homeowners may still claim credits on energy-efficient upgrades like heat pumps, EV chargers, solar, and insulation.
- State-Level Energy Programs: California continues to support other incentive programs beyond HEEHRA, especially those focused on low-income households and energy savings in underserved areas.
